Fire Safety
The law on fire safety has undergone significant changes over the last few years.
Over 117 items of legislation were repealed or amended with the advent of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, which now has prominence as far as legal requirements are concerned.

The law now requires fire risk assessments to be completed for almost all workplaces and where there are 5 or more employees, this must be written down. The assessment must also be written down if there is a licence in force or an alterations notice has been served which requires it.
Most enforcement work is carried out by the Fire Authority, although in some circumstances it is the Council or Health and Safety Executive.
Inspectors are endowed with a number of powers, including the ability to serve alterations, enforcement or prohibition notices. In some circumstances, they are able to close a premises immediately if there is a serious risk.
